Every year, Kerala bursts into celebration during Onam, a festival rooted in the story of King Mahabali.
The Story
Mahabali was a just and beloved Asura king whose reign was marked by peace and prosperity. The gods, fearing his popularity, sought Lord Vishnu’s help. Taking the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, Vishnu asked Mahabali for three paces of land. With two giant strides, Vamana covered the heavens and earth. For the third, Mahabali offered his own head and was pushed into the underworld.
But because of his goodness, Vishnu granted him permission to visit his people once a year—celebrated as Onam.
Why It Matters
This legend is a reminder of humility, sacrifice, and Kerala’s rich cultural identity. Onam today is marked by grand feasts (Sadya), floral carpets (Pookalam), snake boat races, and traditional dances.
